Is it all just pie in the sky – or could Manchester Airport really be haunted?

New archive documents dating back the to 1970s show a string of reports of staff having ghostly encounters.

They are all concentrated on an area around the Terminal Three departure gates – which officially opened in 1989.

The documents, released for the first time, show that some staff were so scared that they did not want to go out into the terminal alone after dark.

The most common account is of a ghostly male figure, dressed as an airman, wandering around the gates before disappearing.

One letter, written in 1971 by a former airport worker, reveals how he had encountered an ‘old man’ whom he believed was the ghost of a night watchman who was killed there years earlier.

Staff have also reported often hearing slamming doors but when they investigate they find rooms empty and lights off.

Another worker claims to have seen a person wearing a pilot’s hat walking into the toilets at night, and hearing the doors shut. No flights were due to arrive or depart at the time. When the worker went into the toilet to investigate there was nobody there – and the motion-sensitive lights hadn’t come on.

Terminal Three stands on top of a number of former RAF buildings, which were home to 613 City of Manchester Squadron in World War Two.

A Manchester Airport spokesman said: “We are often reminded of the myths and legends attached to some of the terminals – and many of the people who work here have had their own experiences. “We’ve even been part of a radio show with a psychic who assured us of the presence of spirits walking the hallways.”

Source: http://menmedia.co.uk/

Footnote: One of the many ‘hotspots’ included on the Paranormal Database website, of this phantom old man that had been seen at the Airport back on the 1970′s by cleaners and late working staff.

It also mentions reports of the occasional scream, coming from the building, that was was once the barracks of the 613 RAF Squadron.

An insider has since told us this week that:-

There was a building near to T3 which use to be the barracks, and I had been told time and time again, it was scary in there at night.

At the bottom of the runway there had also been reports of mystery flights landing, WW2 bombers etc. But this week I watched them bulldoze it. 03/03/2012

Police in Peterborough have been called on to act as ghost busters by victims who feel they may have been targeted by thieves and yobs from beyond the grave.

Findings released by Cambridgeshire Police following a Freedom of Information request by The Evening Telegraph, show Peterborough police have been alerted on six occasions in the last three years to deal with ghostly apparitions.

And in an eerie twist, three of these sightings occurred on the same date – 9th September – in consecutive years.

Two sightings also happened on the same day – 21st February this year – in central Peterborough.

Police said that all reports featuring the word ‘ghost’ in the last three years had occurred within the county’s Northern Division which covers the whole of Peterborough.

The full list of ghostly sightings reported to police includes:

- On 9 September 2009: police were called to a report of a burglary in the PE1 post code area.

The caller told officers it was believed there was a ghost in their house but no trace was ever found.

- On 21 November 2009: a disturbance in a field adjoining a house in Thorney was reported.

Officers were told by locals that this may have been caused by the ghost of a child.

- On 9 September 2010: police were called to a home in Stanground one week after an attempted burglary.

Officers reported that a child had woken at night and believed that a ghost was trying to enter through a window.

- On 21 February 2011: officers stopped a “confused woman” in Peterborough city centre.

They noted that she appeared to be “talking to ghosts”.

- On the same date in the PE1 area, police received a call from a person who claimed to be hearing “ghost noises” as well as seeing hands coming over the top of a door.

The caller also reported a group of three males outside the property, one of whom was a white male.

- On 9 September 2011: a driver on the A47 in central Peterborough reported a person walking down a slip road onto the carriageway against the flow of traffic.

The driver was described to be in such a state of shock that it felt like they “had seen a ghost”.

In all cases police say that no further action was taken by officers.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said: “Reports like these are extremely rare but where people have genuine concerns they or their property is at risk we will investigate if appropriate.”

However, the sightings have come as little surprise to Stuart Orme, who works at the supposedly-haunted Peterborough Museum and organises popular ghost walks through the city centre.

Mr Orme said: “Peterborough is an ancient city with a lot of history and tales get built up over time.

“We have an historic cathedral and other old buildings with links to hundreds of people from the past.

“There have been lots of ghost stories in the city over the years and we go through these on our walks.

“I would say that around 80 per cent of ghost stories can be explained with a rational answer.

“But it’s the remaining 20 per cent that no matter how hard you try to think of one, no logical answer exists.”

Among the places which are said to be haunted are the Queensgate Shopping Centre and the city’s museum.

The museum is said to be stalked by the ghost of a First World War Australian Soldier Sergeant Thomas Hunter, who was taken there in 1916 after being wounded.

Back then the museum was a hospital and Sergeant Hunter died there.

Since then staff have regularly reported furniture being mysteriously moved about.

Peterborough Cathedral is also said to be haunted by three ghosts.

The apparition of a little girl who was apparently murdered there in the 1860s is said to have appeared in a window in one of the building’s precincts.

The ghosts of a monk and a stone mason who also supposedly died there have been spotted as well.

The city’s Cowgate area is believed to be haunted following an incident of body snatching back in the 1820s.

Mr Orme added: “Although the museum is currently closed to the public we still have staff working here and some of those have heard mysterious footsteps when nobody else was around.

“There have been several ghost sightings at the Queensgate Shopping Centre over the past 30 years.

“The centre is built on an old residential area which used to contain shops and homes so people say the ghosts could be former residents there.”

So why are people so fascinated by ghost sightings and what should they do if they experience one?

Mr Orme said: “Ghost sightings capture people’s imaginations because they are linked to our fascination about what happens after death.

“I have met people who claim to have seen ghosts and some of them are the most down-to-earth rational men and women you could ever meet.

“But when they start telling you about the ghost they saw their belief is completely rigid and no amount of reasoning can change their minds.

“At the end of the day people are suckers for a good ghost story – even those who don’t believe in ghosts – and that’s never going to change.”

Have you experienced a ghost sighting in Peterborough recently? Contact our newsdesk on 01733 588728.

The grim activities of the body snatchers

At the end of Cowgate, there used to stand a graveyard, which was removed when the Queensgate Shopping Centre was built.

Eerily, it was one of the last places in the UK to be raided by grisly body snatchers who dug up freshly buried corpses and sold them to doctors for medical practice.

One evening in 1828 a cart was seen outside the cemetery with two men loading suspicious sacks onto it.

The alarm was raised and the men fled, with a cart chase ending near Norman Cross on the edge of the city. Here the men abandoned their getaway cart and fled over the fields.

But do their victims still wander Cowgate, eternally trapped and angry at their sad fate?

In 1986, ten-year-old Polin was hanging out in his room one night with his cousin, who always came to visit around Christmas time. “On this evening, we started to hear what we thought were the neighbors out singing Christmas carols,” Polin vividly remembers. “The sound of the singing was getting louder and louder as, I assumed, the carolers approached our house. In fact, they were singing my favorite Christmas song, ‘Do You Hear What I Hear.’ Interested to see, my cousin and I dashed to the window and started to look out into the dark night. What we saw, or should I say, didn’t see was beyond words.

“Although the singing continued to get louder, there was no one outside! We went to other windows in the house to see better, but still there was no one in sight. We just stared at each other in disbelief. The eerie singing slowly began to fade, as if the invisible carolers were walking past our house.

“I kept telling [my cousin] there had to be a logical explanation for what we heard, but there was not. No radio, TV or other devices were on in our house. Later, we asked some of the neighbors if they were playing Christmas carols that evening. They quickly confirmed our fear when they said no.

On that note: Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2012

Archaeologists have been extremely puzzled when they found a medieval mound strange creature, and at some distance from his gigantic horse herbal bath.

In Nevinnomyssk ordinary, in general, the excavation of an ancient burial mound became virtually episode of “The X-Files.” Archaeologists have found so mysterious artefacts that the experts, just as Dana Scully in the series, denying all non-scientific version of the scientific explanation, yet to offer anything they can not.

NTV correspondent Maxim Berezin considered the findings.

The name of this unique artifact was not invented by science fiction fans, and most that are on the conservative scholars. In the ancient burial place, uncovered during the excavation, it was discovered a strange thing – sheep skeleton with a human skull. More refined definition than chelovekobaran, their discovery, archaeologists were not able to pick up.

Anna Shvyreva, Department of Nature in the Stavropol Museum: “What is it chelovekobaran? That is, there was a combination of cranial young person under 25 years of age and body rams. ”

Sergey Savenko, one of the discoverers of chelovekobarana in the head at first climbed unscientific thought: what if the Stavropol archaeologists have discovered a previously unknown anomalous creature to mankind? Order not disturb the UFO, the skeleton was sent for examination.

Sergey Savenko, Pyatigorsk museum: “They found an analogy, it’s even geographically not so far, this is the territory of Crimea. There have been dumping human skeleton was almost complete, but the hands and feet were cut somewhere to elbow and put in charge of the animal bones were, presumably, a goat. ”

Experts anthropologists have refuted all the fantastic theories, but none of the puzzles Nevinnomyssky burial is not disclosed.

Mysterious burial can excite the imagination of not only archaeologists. Dark Ages – that is all that is known about him yet, some information about the ritual of the specialists there, perhaps because of such artifacts in the North Caucasus had been found.

For all other archaeological features Nevinnomyssk burial is typical for its era. In the afterlife of the deceased was seen off, observing the necessary rituals. The tomb was found weapons and utensils.

Sergey Savenko: “It’s really kind of a unique ritual situation. Whether it was a special man, who had to bury so. ”

The Adventures of archaeologists from the very beginning Nevinnomyssk bought some anti-scientific tone. Not far from the first discovery expedition accidentally unearthed the remains of a horse epic proportions. Warhorse had giant growth – almost two meters at the shoulder(1 meter ≈ 1.09361 yards), and was buried with honors uncharacteristic of the animal.

Anna Shvyreva, Department of Nature in the Stavropol Museum: “For this horse had been dug in the ground a special bath. It was filled with grass, and horse in the tub on his back. “

A team of paranormal investigators have claimed they have made contact with the “spirit” of the dog owned by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the heroic pilot who led the Dambusters raids during the Second World War.

“But they have been absolutely brilliant and have welcomed us with open arms.”

Left: Richard Todd in Dam Busters
Photo: bfi.org.uk

The name of Gibson’s black labrador was used as a code word whenever one of Germany’s Ruhr Dams was breached during the “bouncing bomb” mission in May 1943, and was immortalised in the 1955 film starring Richard Todd.

Among the specialist kit used by the paranormal team were infra-red lights, proximity sensors and video cameras.

Mr Drake added: “We have been up there on three different occasions, each time something different has happened. Something is definitely going on as there has been no power to the office for years.

“The equipment we use to measure the electromagnetic field in a building is very sensitive, and every time we have been inside Guy Gibson’s office there has been a reaction.

“When we have asked the question ‘are you there?,’ the metre has always gone up.”

Fellow paranormal investigator, Michelle Clements, added: “We are looking for the spirit of Guy Gibson, but there have been a lot of things reported about his dog.”

Before his death Nigger was always at the side of Gibson, who would take him for long walks around the airfield.

The raid on the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe Dams was launched on 16 May 1943. Only hours before the raid Gibson was informed that Nigger had been run over by a car outside the camp and he was killed instantaneously.

The Möhne and Eder Dams were breached, but it was a very costly operation with loss of nine aircraft and fifty-three men.

Gibson returned and was subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross but was later killed on a raid against Germany in September 1944, when his Mosquito plane crashed in Holland.

The first sighting of a dog matching Nigger’s description was in February 1952 when a mess waiter working at RAF Scampton reported seeing a “phantom” black dog on the base.

Jim Shortland, a historian who specialises in the Dambuster raids, said he was sceptical about the paranormal but welcomed the investigation.

“What they expect to find I don’t know,” Mr Shortland said.

“But I think anything that helps to keep the memory alive of the things those lads did in the Second World War is a good thing.”

Mr Shortland said the exact location of the dog’s grave was unknown, but it was thought to be near Guy Gibson’s former office next to the 617 Squadron hanger.

Location: York

The most haunted city in England creaks to life as the shadows loom.

Deep in the heart of historic York, you will find the infamous York Dungeon, the City’s ultimate alternative fun venue – A unique combination of real history, horror and humour.

Part of the world famous Dungeons series of attractions, York Dungeon opened in 1986 and takes an eerie look back at the York of yesteryear, where highwaymen ruled and the plague claimed new victims every day.

But what energies does the building itself hold?

Back in 1230AD, The Friary of the Order of the Franciscans, also known as the Greyfriars was situated in Lower Friargate but no Franciscan buildings remain in York today, though part of the Friary outer wall is still standing. It also housed Parliaments and in 1319 held King Edward II’s Court and Headquarters following his abortive siege on Berwick, again showing the magnitude of the buildings.

Established in the year 1827, the York Institute of Popular Science and Literature (or the ‘Mechanics’ Institute) was a more humble, but a very useful institution.

In 1892 the corporation purchased the ‘Mechanics’ Institute for £4,100; the institute had been opened in St. Saviour gate in 1827 and moved to Clifford Street in 1885.

Then the Public Library was opened in the building in October 1893. From its inception the Public Library contained a News Room, and during the 19th century there were several other News Rooms in the city.

The building is now home to the Gallery nightclub, and also the York Dungeon, which is full of screams by day, everyday.

But is the building itself haunted or is it just full of residual energy from frightened visitors?

There has been many reports of strange occurrences. From the feeling of being followed, to being touched in the dark.

Whose footsteps can be heard on the stairs. Could this be the old caretaker who is said to still walk these Hallowed Halls or the Schoolmistress.
